  16. <p>The Pope holds fast against ordaining female members of the
  17. clergy

  19. <p>    The Church of England is consumed with a landmark vote,
  20. scheduled next November, on whether to allow women priests. That
  21. innovation deeply divides the worldwide Anglican Communion, in
  22. which 14 of 34 branches now ordain women to the priesthood. The
  23. same issue clouded the ecumenical scene last week when
  24. Anglicanism's Primate, Archbishop of Canterbury George Carey,
  25. visited Rome for his first summit meeting with Pope John Paul.
  26. Carey, who did not repeat his publicized objections to Rome's
  27. hard line on birth control, emerged to describe the encounter
  28. of nearly one hour as "excellent, excellent."
  29. </p>
  30. <p>    Cordiality aside, women's ordination turned out to be a
  31. big sticking point. The official communique stated that
  32. Archbishop Carey deemed the practice "a possible and proper
  33. development," while John Paul said it "constitutes a grave
  34. obstacle to the whole process of Anglican-Roman Catholic
  35. reconciliation." The Pope's latest warning on women, however,
  36. will do nothing to dissuade yes votes in England or elsewhere.
  37. For one thing, lingering hopes for Anglican-Catholic reunion
  38. were dashed last December by a significant Vatican pronouncement
  39. that ruled out any compromise on the powers of the papacy.
